CHAPTER TWENTY ONE

A burst of adrenaline flooded Ashley’s body as a black pickup crossed into her lane and barreled straight toward her on the narrow highway that led to Warren Shipley’s farm.

That truck’s going to hit me head-on!

She jerked the steering wheel of Wyatt’s SUV and swerved to the right. The tires bit into the gravel on the road’s shoulder as she yanked her foot from the accelerator. It wasn’t the first time she’d noticed a driver in Bonner County ignoring the yellow dividing line that striped the center of the asphalt.

And she’d thought Laurel County’s drivers were bad. At least in her hometown, people knew to stick to their own lane.

The SUV idled on the road’s shoulder while Ashley caught her breath.

As she eased back onto the highway, her cell phone rang. Not wanting to pull her eyes away from the road for any longer than necessary, she slid her phone from her jacket pocket and held it near the top of the steering wheel before glancing at the screen.

The caller ID had been blocked. Maybe it was Daniel calling from a burner phone. She put the call on speaker.

“Hello?”

There was only silence on the line.

Guessing the caller was a telemarketer, she was about to hang up when she heard a faint noise echoing over the phone.

It sounded like laughter.

A split second later, three beeps signaled the call had dropped.

How odd.

Ashley was about to shove the phone back into her pocket when it rang a second time. The caller ID displayed the number this time, but it was one she didn’t recognize. She debated answering, but the possibility that she might miss a call from Daniel outweighed any annoyance a telemarketer would bring. Again, she answered on speaker.

“Hello?” she said, her tone tentative.

“Hey.”

This time she was right. It was Daniel.

“It’s so good to hear your voice.”

The words spilled out before she could stop them.

“Yours too,” the agent replied.

Ashley smiled. “I see by the number you’re calling from that you’re still working undercover.”

“Yeah. But we’ve hit a snag. The good news is: that gave me time to call. How’s your case going?”

She wondered whether she should tell Daniel that it was possible Wyatt hated her. That her partner likely believed that Ashley was reckless enough to put his life in danger.

“Well, there’s a good chance that we may have caught our roadside killer.”

“That’s great news.”

She sighed. “But there’s also the chance that I may have screwed up – big time.”

“How so?”

Hoping Daniel wouldn’t think she was a terrible person, Ashley struggled to find the best way to explain the situation.

“I said something to Wyatt that I didn’t really mean and it’s driven a wedge between us. But I realize now that I’ve been reading him wrong since the day we met. I need to figure out a way to smooth things over – to let him know that he can trust me.”

The agent remained silent.

Was he still on the line?

“Daniel?”

“I’m here.”

She wondered if they had a bad connection.

“Did you hear what I told you about Wyatt?”

“Yeah.
